Our clients are successful Canadians whose financial lives have outgrown a single account, product or spreadsheet. We coordinate the moving pieces so the next decision is easier to make.
What shapes financial planning in Winnipeg and Manitoba
Manitoba's small business rate is nil
Manitoba eliminated its provincial small business tax in 2010, so the provincial rate on the first $500,000 of active business income is 0%. With the federal 9%, that income is taxed at 9% combined, compared with 11% in BC or Alberta. Above the limit, Manitoba's general rate is 12%, which is 27% combined.
Manitoba follows the federal passive income rule
Manitoba applies the federal reduction to its own limit. Because Manitoba's low rate is zero, a corporation that loses the limit to investment income moves that income from 9% to 27% combined, one of the larger swings among the provinces we serve. Investment income above $50,000 a year inside the corporation starts the reduction.
Family businesses raise succession questions first
Winnipeg's economy includes advanced manufacturing, aerospace and agribusiness, according to Economic Development Winnipeg, and many of those businesses are owned by families. The planning question is often succession: who takes over, who is bought out, and how the other children are treated fairly.
No probate fee, but still a plan
Manitoba no longer charges a probate fee on estates. That removes a cost, not the work. Who acts as executor, how a corporation's shares pass, and who is told what still decide how smoothly an estate settles.
Investing the money in your Winnipeg corporation
If your Manitoba corporation has $1,000,000 or more invested inside it, the tax on that money deserves its own plan. The federal small business rate is 9% on the first $500,000 of active business income. Passive investment income above $50,000 a year starts to reduce that $500,000 limit, and it is gone at $150,000. Manitoba follows that rule, so we coordinate with your accountant on the year-end and on passive income through the year.
One coordinated plan, not five separate conversations
Wealth management in Winnipeg usually means several advisors who each see one part of the picture. At Insight Planning, a Certified Financial Planner leads one plan across tax, investments, retirement and estate, built on the Insight 360° OS, so each decision is made with the others in view.
Your plan stays current through scheduled reviews and a team you know by name, by secure video or in person at our Kelowna office.

Questions Winnipeg clients ask
Does Insight Planning have an office in Winnipeg?
No. Our office is in Kelowna, BC, and Winnipeg clients work with us by secure video. Winnipeg is on Central time, two hours ahead of Kelowna, so our 9:00 to 5:00 Pacific day is 11:00 to 7:00 in Winnipeg.
Who is a good fit for a Winnipeg financial advisor like Insight Planning?
Owners of corporations, incorporated professionals and families with $1M+ to invest, including family-business owners planning for succession.
Is Manitoba's small business tax really nil?
Yes. Manitoba eliminated its small business tax in 2010, so only the federal 9% applies to the first $500,000 of active business income. The passive income rule still applies, so the benefit can be lost.
Can you work with my Winnipeg accountant and lawyer?
Yes, with your permission. We prepare what your accountant needs from the account and speak to them directly.
How are you paid?
How we are paid is set out in writing before you open an account, in dollars. See our fees page for how we explain it.
How do I start?
Request an introduction. A short first meeting to see if we’re the right fit, for both of us. Three questions, and we reply within two business days.
