What shapes financial planning in Toronto and Ontario

Ontario's small business rate fell on July 1, 2026

Ontario's rate on the first $500,000 of active business income is 2.2% from July 1, 2026, down from 3.2%. With the federal 9%, that is 11.2% combined, and above the limit Ontario's general rate of 11.5% gives 26.5%. A tax year that straddles July 1 is blended, so the year-end date matters.

Ontario does not follow the federal passive income rule for its own rate

A corporation whose investment income reduces the federal limit still keeps Ontario's low rate. Active income then moves from 11.2% to 17.2% (15% federal plus Ontario's 2.2%), not to 26.5%. The federal reduction still begins at $50,000 of passive income a year. Your accountant confirms how it applies to your corporation.

Professional corporations answer to the profession's regulator

Toronto has a large concentration of physicians, dentists, lawyers and accountants, and finance, technology, life sciences and the creative industries, according to the City of Toronto. Ontario professional corporations are governed by each profession's regulator, and the rules on who may own shares differ by profession, so we work from your accountant's advice and the regulator's guidance.

Ontario's estate administration tax has no cap

Ontario charges no estate administration tax on the first $50,000 and $15 per $1,000 above it, with no maximum. On $2,000,000 of assets that pass through the estate, that is about $29,250. Assets that pass by joint ownership or a named beneficiary do not, which is why how accounts are titled belongs in the plan.

Insight Corporate Wealth

Investing the money in your Toronto corporation

If your Ontario corporation has $1,000,000 or more invested inside it, the portfolio should be built for how a corporation is taxed. The federal small business rate is 9% on the first $500,000 of active business income. Passive investment income above $50,000 a year starts to reduce that $500,000 limit, and it is gone at $150,000. Ontario's own treatment differs from the federal one, so we coordinate with your accountant on the year-end.

Common questions

Questions Toronto clients ask

Does Insight Planning have an office in Toronto?

No. Our office is in Kelowna, BC, and Toronto clients work with us by secure video. Toronto is on Eastern time, three hours ahead of Kelowna, so our 9:00 to 5:00 Pacific day is 12:00 to 8:00 in Toronto.

Who is a good fit for a Toronto financial advisor like Insight Planning?

Owners of corporations, incorporated professionals and families with $1M+ to invest, and people facing a decision that touches everything at once: a sale, an inheritance, retirement, or a corporation that has outgrown its operating account.

What changed with Ontario's small business rate?

From July 1, 2026 the Ontario rate on the first $500,000 of active business income is 2.2%, down from 3.2%. A corporation with a year-end that straddles July 1 is taxed on a blended rate.

Can you work with my Toronto accountant and lawyer?

Yes, with your permission. We prepare what your accountant needs from the account and speak to them directly before decisions that change the corporation's tax picture.

How are you paid?

How we are paid is set out in writing before you open an account, in dollars. See our fees page for how we explain it.

How do I start?

Request an introduction. A short first meeting to see if we’re the right fit, for both of us. Three questions, and we reply within two business days.
