Financial planning in Calgary

Financial planning for Calgary business owners and families

Insight Planning serves Calgary clients virtually from its Kelowna office. We coordinate tax, investments, retirement and estate decisions for owners of corporations, incorporated professionals and families with $1M+ to invest, in one plan, reviewed with the same team every time.

Our clients are successful Canadians whose financial lives have outgrown a single account, product or spreadsheet. We coordinate the moving pieces so the next decision is easier to make.

What shapes financial planning in Calgary and Alberta

A low corporate rate puts the focus on what stays inside

Alberta's small business rate is 2% and its general corporate rate is 8%, lower than the 11.5% to 12% general rates in the other four provinces we serve. With the federal rates, an Alberta corporation pays 11% on its first $500,000 of active business income and 23% above it. When operating income is taxed lightly, the tax on money left inside the corporation to invest matters more, not less. Alberta also has no provincial sales tax.

Uneven income calls for planning before the year-end

Many Calgary clients are paid through bonuses, equity compensation or contract income that changes from year to year, and energy remains the largest part of Alberta's economy. We map the year's income early, so decisions about salary, dividends, RRSP contributions and the timing of a sale are made on a plan and not in December.

Probate is capped, so the structure matters more than the fee

Alberta's probate fee is a flat schedule that tops out at $525 for estates over $250,000. The cost to the court is small. The planning that matters is who acts for you, who inherits what, and how the shares of a corporation pass to the next owner.

Professional corporations follow the regulator's rules

Physicians, engineers and other regulated professionals in Calgary often practise through a professional corporation. Who may own shares, and how profit can be shared with family, depends on the profession's regulator, so we work from your accountant's advice and the regulator's guidance.

Insight Corporate Wealth

Investing the money in your Calgary corporation

If your Alberta corporation has $1,000,000 or more invested inside it, the useful question is how much tax the portfolio creates each year, and when. The federal small business rate is 9% on the first $500,000 of active business income. Passive investment income above $50,000 a year starts to reduce that $500,000 limit, and it is gone at $150,000. How that interacts with Alberta's own rules is a question for your accountant, which is why we coordinate with them directly, with your permission.

Wealth management in Calgary

One coordinated plan, not five separate conversations

Wealth management in Calgary usually means several advisors who each see one part of the picture. At Insight Planning, a Certified Financial Planner leads one plan across tax, investments, retirement and estate, built on the Insight 360° OS, so each decision is made with the others in view.

Your plan stays current through scheduled reviews and a team you know by name, by secure video or in person at our Kelowna office.

Common questions

Questions Calgary clients ask

Does Insight Planning have an office in Calgary?

No. Our office is in Kelowna, BC, and Calgary clients work with us by secure video. Calls are scheduled in Mountain time: our 9:00 to 5:00 Pacific day is 10:00 to 6:00 in Calgary.

Who is a good fit for a Calgary financial advisor like Insight Planning?

Owners of corporations, incorporated professionals and families with $1M+ to invest, and people facing a decision that touches everything at once: a sale, an inheritance, retirement, or a corporation that has outgrown its operating account.

Do you work with people paid through bonuses, equity or contract income?

Yes. Uneven income is where a plan helps most, because the order of decisions matters: what is taken as salary or dividends, what is contributed to an RRSP, and what is left to invest.

Can you coordinate with my Calgary accountant and lawyer?

Yes, with your permission. We prepare what your accountant needs from the investment account and speak to them directly, so your tax and legal advice and your investments are working from the same facts.

How are you paid?

How we are paid is set out in writing before you open an account, so you can see it in dollars and decide. See our fees page for how we explain it.

How do I start?

Request an introduction. A short first meeting to see if we’re the right fit, for both of us. Three questions, and we reply within two business days.
