Financial planning for Vancouver business owners and families
Insight Planning works with Vancouver clients by secure video from its Kelowna office, in the same time zone. We coordinate tax, investments, retirement and estate decisions for business owners, incorporated professionals and families with $1M+ to invest, in one plan.
Our clients are successful Canadians whose financial lives have outgrown a single account, product or spreadsheet. We coordinate the moving pieces so the next decision is easier to make.
What shapes financial planning in Vancouver and British Columbia
In BC, passive income can cost a corporation 16 points of tax
British Columbia's small business rate is 2% and its general rate is 12%. With the federal rates that is 11% on the first $500,000 of active business income and 27% above it. BC applies the federal passive income rule to its own limit, so when investment income inside the corporation reduces the limit, income that would have been taxed at 11% is taxed at 27%. Managing that is the main reason to invest a corporation's cash on purpose.
A Metro Vancouver balance sheet is often mostly property
For many owners, most of the net worth sits in real estate, held personally or inside a corporation. We look at the whole balance sheet, so the investment plan is built around the property and not in spite of it, and so a decision about one does not quietly undo the other.
A sale or a share event needs years of notice
Owners of growing companies in the city's technology, trade, creative and professional-services businesses may face a sale, a recapitalization or an exit. The lifetime capital gains exemption is $1,275,000 for 2026 for qualifying shares, and qualifying for it can take planning years in advance, not weeks.
Probate in BC has no cap
BC charges no probate fee up to $25,000, $6 per $1,000 from $25,000 to $50,000, and $14 per $1,000 above $50,000, with no maximum. On $2,000,000 of assets that pass through probate, that is about $27,450. Assets that pass by joint ownership or a named beneficiary do not go through probate, which is why how accounts are titled is part of the plan.
Investing the money in your Vancouver corporation
If your BC corporation has $1,000,000 or more invested inside it, the aim is a portfolio that does not hand your accountant a surprise at filing. The federal small business rate is 9% on the first $500,000 of active business income. Passive investment income above $50,000 a year starts to reduce that $500,000 limit, and it is gone at $150,000. We build the portfolio to distribute less income each year and coordinate with your accountant on the year-end.
One coordinated plan, not five separate conversations
Wealth management in Vancouver usually means several advisors who each see one part of the picture. At Insight Planning, a Certified Financial Planner leads one plan across tax, investments, retirement and estate, built on the Insight 360° OS, so each decision is made with the others in view.
Your plan stays current through scheduled reviews and a team you know by name, by secure video or in person at our Kelowna office.

Questions Vancouver clients ask
Is Insight Planning in Vancouver?
Our office is in Kelowna, BC. Vancouver clients work with us by secure video in the same Pacific time zone, and in-person meetings take place at our Kelowna office.
Who is a good fit in Metro Vancouver?
Owners of corporations, incorporated professionals and families with $1M+ to invest, especially where property, a corporation and a retirement date all have to be planned together.
Why does BC's passive income rule matter to my corporation?
Because BC follows the federal rule, passive investment income above $50,000 a year reduces the $500,000 small business limit, and at $150,000 the limit is gone. The same active income then moves from 11% to 27% combined tax. The corporation's investments are one of the few things you control that affect it.
Can you work with my accountant and lawyer?
Yes, with your permission. We prepare what your accountant needs from the account, and we speak to them directly before decisions that change the corporation's tax picture.
How are you paid?
How we are paid is set out in writing before you open an account, in dollars. See our fees page for how we explain it.
How do I start?
Request an introduction. A short first meeting to see if we’re the right fit, for both of us. Three questions, and we reply within two business days.
